Engineering students lead a busy life! Success in the Engineering curriculum requires a substantial time commitment and hard work. The Engage Living and Learning Community (Engage LLC) brings together first-year and upper class engineering students in a residential environment to help students adjust to life as they enter their first year in college.
The Engage LLC provides a supportive environment for first-year students who have been admitted to the College of Engineering where they can develop a sense of camaraderie with other engineering students. Living together allows students to share notes, work together in study groups, and participate in fun and educational outings. First-year Engage LLC students have access to faculty and upper class community members who serve as mentors and plan activities to make the first year experience successful and fun.
Foundations
Living and Learning Communities at UT provide students the opportunity to live in a community surrounded by a close-knit peer group who are pursuing similar goals and interests. The communities provide students the opportunity to develop relationships that aid in the transition to the university. Learn more about UT’s LLCs.
First year engineering coursework at UT is concentrated in the Engage Engineering Fundamentals program and the Cook Grand Challenge Honors Program. In these success-oriented environments, students learn by interacting with others to create solutions to engineering problems as they explore engineering fields. Engage student teams perform project-oriented, hands-on activities in physics and computer applications.
Housing
First-year engineering students are not required to reside in the Engage LLC, but choosing to live in the Engage LLC community gives you access to a personal mentor, organized tutoring and study sessions, and LLC only field trips and outings. Living in the Engage LLC makes it easier to find others in your classes to study with and hang out with, so you can develop strong relationships with other future engineers. This Learning Community is open to all students accepted into the College of Engineering – everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply.
Beyond Academics
Students in the Engage LLC have taken trips to nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Neyland Stadium as well as taken extracurricular trips to participate in laser tag, bowling, and escape rooms. LLC’s are supported by a network of program coordinators and staff who serve the mission of the community.

To apply to the Engage LLC, please follow these steps:
- Become a Vol!
If you haven’t done so already, confirm your enrollment in your MyUTK account at my.utk.edu. - Submit your housing contract.
Review and complete the housing contract sent to your email address. - Complete your LLC application.
Applications open in February through your University Housing Portal. - Select your room.
Once you have been accepted into an LLC, you’ll be able to select from the available rooms for that community. Additional information will be sent in April; room selection begins in May.
